View Full Version : Question about Thumbnail Background Colors

When I uploaded a couple of identical designs, one in black text for light colored products, and a second one with white text for dark colored products. After upload, I changed the background of the image with white text to black, and it did change in the image backet.
However, when I uploaded them to sections in my store (one section for dark products, and another for light products with the same design), The background color with the white text is also white, making the text invisible. I thought that the changes in the background color on a transparent png image would display it with that background in the Section thumbnails. Am I doing something wrong, or is there really a bug somewhere?
Any insight into this would be appreciated! If it is something I am doing or not doing, please let me know what to change. :)
This has happened to me on two separate designs now (with two of the images having white letters.)
Thanks, gang!

Maybe try this:
I haven't messed with it because I didn't use transparent section images and my background is white so it would be a mute point..
...but if you click on the "edit section info" button there is now a thing that appears there that lets you preserve transparency and says that it will be saved as .gif - think this might help you?

Edited to say - scratch that. That's not going to get you what you want.

Mare,
This is the desired behavior, for the moment. We didn't put a connection between the image in the image basket's background and the section image's background (even though the section image is derived from the image basket) as it could be a hindrance. For instance, let’s say you want your image to always be on a black background when displayed in the mall but you want that same image to be transparent as a section image as you have a gradient background in your store. If the section image always used the background from your image basket you’d probably have to upload a second image just for your section image, which is something we don’t want!
There a couple of options we're thinking about for later releases such as inputting a separate background color for the section image or an option to either be: transparent, none transparent (white background), or use the background color of the image basket color. Any suggestions?

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for letting me know that this is actually not a bug. I am glad that it is something you are aware of, but maybe later, an option could be added for just the section image background color? May that is too involved.
I can find ways to work around this. I am offering the black letter image on light colored products, and I have a white letter image for the dark colors. It is just a matter of having more than one of each product in the section that is offered in both light and dark colors, each with it's black or white image set up for printing purposes. It just makes me have to choose what to show in the Section Thumbnail, but that is not a biggy to me. :)
Thanks for enlightening me about this! I appreciate all that you do!

I too found this difference the hard way. I had read about being able to make the section thumbnails bigger, and figured out that I had to deselect and reselect the image to get that ability, and once I did that, the black backgrounds I had for half the images in that store were no longer available. I don't really like the way it looks now with all the images on white, even with them larger. In fact I'm not even sure I like them larger, now, either... In retrospect, I would have just left things alone.
My suggestions would be 1.) to make the black background for the thumbnails an option again 2.) also have an option for a direct upload of a section image from your computer, so it doesn't have to be sitting in your already full image basket along with your design images and 3.) for there to be a way to have the thumbnail appear as 150x150 on the page where you're looking at images for all your sections, and then blow up to a larger image on the page where it is at the head of that section of products.
Thanks for reading!
